Unscented Massage Oil: Why We Took Everything Out
Posted on October 10 2026
Walk down any massage oil aisle and you'll smell it before you see it. Vanilla. "Sensual musk." Something called Midnight Passion that smells like a car air freshener.
We went the other way. Our new formula of Coconut After Dark is unscented. Five ingredients. That's the whole label.
Here's why we did it, exactly what's in the bottle, and what we deliberately left out.
Why unscented?
Because the best part of a massage isn't the smell of the oil. It's the person.
- No perfume competing with your partner. Their skin, their shampoo, the room. That's what you want to notice.
- No headache halfway through. Strong fragrance in a warm, closed room gets old fast, especially for people sensitive to scent.
- It works with your space. Light a candle you already love. The oil won't clash with it.
- No lingering smell on your sheets or on you the next morning at work.
Fragrance is also one of the easiest places for a label to hide a long list of extras under one word. Taking it out let us keep the ingredient list short enough to read in one breath.
All five ingredients, and what each one does
| Ingredient | Why it's in there |
|---|---|
| Caprylic/capric triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil) | The base. A light, smooth oil that glides easily and doesn't turn tacky partway through. |
| Coconut oil | Adds a richer, more cushioned feel to the glide. |
| Sunflower seed oil | A light plant oil that keeps the texture smooth and easy to spread. |
| Beeswax | Gives the oil a little body so it stays where you put it instead of running. |
| Vitamin E | An antioxidant that helps keep the oils fresh in the bottle. |
That's it. 3.4 fl oz (100 mL). Warm a little between your palms and go slow. The label says it best: Slow down. Sink in.
What we left out
Just as important as what's in it:
- No added fragrance
- No alcohol
- No glycerin
- No parabens
- No petroleum
- No phthalates
- No dyes
Every one of these is common in massage products. None of them make a massage better.
How to use it
- Warm a small amount between your palms for a few seconds.
- Start with slow, long strokes with flat hands.
- Add a little more when your hands start to catch, warming it in your palms first.
- Put a blanket down before you start. Oil on sheets is the number one reason people rush. (The Accent is waterproof and goes in the wash afterward.)
Good to know: Coconut After Dark is for external use only. Oils can weaken latex, so keep it away from latex products. As with any new product, try a little on a small area of skin first.

Frequently asked questions
What is unscented massage oil?
Unscented massage oil has no added fragrance, so it doesn't smell like vanilla, musk, or essential oils. Coconut After Dark is unscented and made with five ingredients: fractionated coconut oil, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, beeswax, and vitamin E.
Is unscented the same as fragrance-free?
People use the terms interchangeably. What matters is the ingredient list. Coconut After Dark has no added fragrance, and all five ingredients are listed on the label, so there's nothing hidden under a generic "fragrance" line.
Does Coconut After Dark smell like coconut?
It has no added fragrance. Any scent comes only from the oils themselves, and it's very light, so it won't compete with your partner, your candle, or the room.
Is Coconut After Dark safe to use with condoms?
Oils can weaken latex, so keep Coconut After Dark away from latex condoms and other latex products. It's a massage oil for external use only.
How do I keep massage oil from staining my sheets?
Put a waterproof blanket on top of the bed before you start, so oil never reaches the sheets. If oil does get on fabric, treat it before it goes in the dryer. Here's how.
What to do now
If your current massage oil smells like a candle store, try one that lets you notice each other instead.
